Amelia Island Beaches & More
Unlike many beach resorts, public access to the Amelia Island beaches is plentiful. From Main Beach, at the end of Atlantic Avenue (Hoyt House is also on this beautiful wide boulevard to the sea), to Peter's Point, to American Beach, there are over 40 public parking areas that offer easy beach access. Just pick your favorite spot to enjoy the sun and surf! Visitors can enjoy swimming, surfing, sailing, fishing, jogging along the surf edge, or even horseback riding amongst the sand dunes.
And of
course, the island is plentiful with sea shore wildlife, including herons
and sea turtles. The latter are often easily spotted during nesting
season. In fact, the Amelia Island Sea Turtle Watch was founded in 1985 to focus attention on the declining population of sea turtles caused by increased development, recreational activities, and environmental changes. Each May volunteers with the group conduct a nesting sea turtle survey to determine population density. Data is used by local and state officials to monitor effectiveness of policies. They also advise the US Corp of Engineers on the impact of beach re-nourishment projects to sea turtle nesting activities.
