Amelia Island Book Festival

Once a year Fernandina Beach on Amelia Island is the place to be if you are an author, an aspiring writer, or just love good books!

Since its founding in 2001, the Amelia Island Book Festival has provided both authors and book lovers the opportunity to meet and exchange ideas while enjoying the spectacular natural wonders of this First Coast barrier island.

The goal of the festival is to "create an affordable, lively event promoting two concepts - that reading is great fun, and good writing makes good reading" according to Joani Selement.  The inspiration for the festival is the Welsh hamlet of Hay-on-Wye, which has become famous as Book Town.

Each year in October, authors, aspiring writers, and readers have an opportunity to gather at readings, talks, workshops, and social events.  The affair is informal, and set at venues around the island, such as the beautiful halls and open-air courtyards at St. Peters Episcopal Church.  Which, by the way, is directly across the street from Hoyt House.

The festival draws attendance from across the United States and overseas, and becomes grander and more exciting with each passing year.  It is a beautiful way to promote literacy by showing that reading is both entertaining and educational.
