Historic Fort Clinch Florida State Park

On the northern end of Amelia Island is the historic Fort Clinch state park.  In addition to offering wide expanses of beautiful, sandy beaches, this Florida Park contains the partially restored pre-Civil War fort named for General Duncan Lamont Clinch, an important figure in Florida's Seminole War of the 1830s. The fort was begun in 1847 shortly after Amelia Island came under its eighth flag, the United States. The fort was manned by Confederate forces in 1861, but came under Federal control a year later.

During World War II the US Coast Guard established a coastal surveillance system based at the Fort.  This operation included mounted beach patrols, watching for suspicious landings. This was the last military use of the area.

A visit to this amazing fortification is a must on any Amelia Island vacation.  Each summer weekend the park service conducts candlelight tours, and presents full costumed re-enactments many times during the year.  The park Visitor Center provides maps, souvenirs, and assistance.

In addition to the historic sites, the locale provides stunning views of Cumberland Island, the Amelia River, and the Atlantic.  Miles of trails provide for interesting hiking and biking, and the often-deserted beaches provide an opportunity for quiet enjoyment and ocean-side relaxation.  The fishing pier offers anglers the ideal location to catch the "big one", as well as the opportunity to view manatees, dolphins, and the occasional nuclear submarine!

In short, visitors to this lovely state park can enjoy nature walks, historic re-enactments, bird watching, swimming and sun bathing, biking, and ocean pier fishing.

The state charges a small admission fee for access to the park. You can get hours, directions, and other useful information here Fort Clinch State Park.
